BREAKING: Today is Coach Fracassa’s funeral. The man meant the world to me. He shaped my life in so many ways. I had never played football before going to Brother Rice, but I was very aware of his legendary presence and the aura around the program, so I signed up. What he gave me was wildly more than I could have imagined. Coach taught me (so many!) life lessons, guided us to the 2005 state championship win, and put into my world incredible coaches, mentors, teammates, and friends. Brother Rice football players help coach the Marian Powderpuff team, and in 2006, I signed up to do that. I drove daily to those practices with my friend Claire. Those drives ended up being the start of my friendship with Claire evolving into the most important and special relationship in my life. Eight years later, Coach and Phyllis attended our wedding. I don’t recall a time seeing Coach Fracassa where I missed saying “Thank you.” Was I a good football player? If you know me, you know the answer is a firm “No.” If you knew Coach Fracassa, he’d laugh and tell you how slow I was. But after getting that chuckle, he’d always share a warm remark about our time together on the field. Coach did that with each one of us who suited up for him. He had a gift of truly knowing what made each one of us tick, and how to unlock our true potential. I saved voicemails from Coach, and in the last one he left me, the final message he gave was one he said to me a lot: “Be you.” I tell my son and daughter that all the time. Be the GOOD parts of you, and don’t let the world harden or darken your soul. Introducing Coach Fracassa to our kids made my heart explode with emotions, and I know thousands of his former players feel the same way. I believe, like so many of my friends and fellow “has-beens” believe, that my wife, our kids, and my path in life, are due largely in part to his guidance. And so I’ll always say “thank you” to him, like I know all his friends, former players, and family members will.
