SMU struck first with authority: on the game’s opening play, Kevin Jennings fired a 75\u2011yard touchdown pass to Romello Brinson that left everyone breathless and set a tone of mustard\u2011thin margins and explosive playmaking \u00a0The Mustangs didn\u2019t relent; they stretched their early advantage to 10\u20110 with a 43\u2011yard field goal by Collin Rogers<\/p>\n

But Baylor wasn\u2019t here to roll over. QB Sawyer Robertson, now in the midst of a remarkable run, started to carve up the SMU defense. But Baylor refused to be denied. Bryson Washington powered in a 7\u2011yard touchdown and SMU\u2019s dominance was cut in half at the half\u201424\u201121 (Baylor<\/a>, SI<\/a>). The third quarter yielded only a field goal for Baylor, knotted things at 24\u201124 (Baylor<\/a>, SI<\/a>). For three and a half quarters, SMU had played sharp; then, everything shifted.<\/p>\n

With 8:38 left, SMU\u2019s T.J. Harden took over\u2014he ripped off a 40\u2011yard run and added a score to push SMU up 38\u201124\u00a0LMT Online<\/a>). Baylor looked done\u2026 until Robertson, calm and laser\u2011focused, orchestrated a breathtaking 72\u2011play, 48\u2011yard touchdown drive, capped by Cameron with about 5:23 remaining (Baylor<\/a>, SI<\/a>). OT unfolded with perfect symmetry: Baylor ran it in with Washington for the first touchdown. SMU answered immediately, a 25\u2011yard pass to Brinson nudged them ahead and forced double overtime. But in the second OT, SMU\u2019s kicker, Collin Rogers, missed from about 38 yards\u2014a crucial misfire\u00a0Then, Baylor leaned into discipline\u2014five straight runs, patient, physical. And freshman kicker Connor Hawkins delivered\u201427 yards, right through the uprights\u2014Baylor wins 48\u201145 in a seismic upset<\/p>\n

Sawyer Robertson finished 34\u2011of\u201150 for a staggering 440 yards and four touchdowns, no interceptions, marking his third straight 400\u2011yard outing to begin the season. His October keeps rising\u2014he\u2019s now amassed 859 yards and seven touchdowns through two games \u00a0Josh Cameron hauled in nine catches for 151 yards and two TDs; Ashtyn Hawkins had a career day, 10 catches for 145 yards. Washington bulldozed for 115 yards and two scores. Baylor\u2019s total offense: 601 yards, nearly 150 more than SMU\u2019s 458 (Baylor<\/a>, SI<\/a>).<\/p>\n

SMU\u2019s big performers weren\u2019t absent: Jennings threw for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns; Harden added 115 rushing yards and three TDs\u2014record-setting numbers, yet it wasn\u2019t enough\u00a0The difference? Missed kicks and defensive fatigue\u2014crucial failures in the clutch.<\/p>\n

Game context: Baylor\u2019s now 1\u20111, ready for Samford next; SMU also stands at 1\u20111. Importantly, Baylor extended its dominance in this historic rivalry\u2014their 14th straight win against SMU, dating back decades to the Southwest Conference saga<\/p>\n

Coach Dave Aranda was characteristically proud but measured: praised his team\u2019s fight, acknowledged mistakes, underscored the improvement ahead (SI<\/a>).<\/p>\n
