In a remarkable act of generosity and unity, the Los Angeles Dodgers have made a statement far beyond the baseball diamond. Superstar first baseman Freddie Freeman and the entire Dodgers roster have collectively donated $12.5 million to purchase and renovate a historic Los Angeles property, transforming it into a long-term shelter for homeless and at-risk youth. The shelter will be named in honor of their beloved manager, Dave Roberts, as a symbol of his profound impact on their lives both on and off the field.<\/p>\n

This extraordinary gesture, announced in a joint press release by the Dodgers and the City of Los Angeles on Tuesday morning, reflects not only the team’s commitment to social responsibility but also the deep respect and admiration the players have for Roberts. The home, located in the heart of South Los Angeles, is expected to open in early 2026 and will serve as a safe haven for youth experiencing homelessness, providing housing, education, mental health care, and mentorship services.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more than baseball,\u201d Freeman said in an emotional address during the press event. \u201cIt\u2019s about family, leadership, and lifting each other up. Dave has given us everything \u2014 his heart, his time, his belief in us as men, not just players. We wanted to give something back in his name that could carry his spirit forward for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

The building, a large Spanish-style estate previously used as a community arts center, had been in disrepair for years. With this donation, the structure will be fully restored and redesigned to accommodate up to 40 residents at a time, with rooms designated for education, therapy, job training, and group recreation. The shelter will be operated in partnership with Covenant House California and the Los Angeles Housing Services Authority (LAHSA), two of the leading organizations tackling youth homelessness in the region.<\/p>\n

Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler, who helped coordinate logistics with LAHSA, described the effort as \u201cthe most meaningful thing I\u2019ve been a part of since joining this team.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is about planting something real in our city,\u201d Buehler said. \u201cEvery day, we drive past kids who don\u2019t know where they\u2019ll sleep tonight. That\u2019s not okay. This is a way for us to say, \u2018We see you. You matter. You have a future.\u2019 And to do it in Dave\u2019s name? That\u2019s perfect. Because that\u2019s who he is \u2014 the guy who never gives up on anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dave Roberts, who has led the Dodgers to three National League pennants and two World Series titles since becoming manager in 2016, is widely regarded as one of the most respected leaders in professional sports. His impact on the team, however, goes far beyond wins and losses. Known for his unwavering positivity, empathy, and mentorship, Roberts has built a clubhouse culture defined by trust and togetherness.<\/p>\n

When asked about the honor, a visibly moved Roberts fought back tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t even know what to say,\u201d he began. \u201cTo be recognized in this way\u2026 it\u2019s overwhelming. I always tell the guys: \u2018Lead with your heart.\u2019 That\u2019s what I\u2019ve tried to do, and to see them respond with something like this \u2014 it\u2019s the greatest gift of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts, who grew up in a multicultural household and has spoken candidly about overcoming poverty and racism as a child, said the shelter project resonates deeply with his own journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were people who stepped up for me when I was young,\u201d he said. \u201cCoaches, teachers, neighbors \u2014 people who believed in me when I didn\u2019t yet believe in myself. That\u2019s what this place will be for these kids: a second chance, a fresh start. If my name can help inspire them to keep going, then I\u2019ll carry that honor with pride.\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea for the donation originated last fall, during the Dodgers\u2019 offseason team retreat in Big Bear, California. Freeman, Mookie Betts, and Clayton Kershaw led a team meeting focused not on baseball goals, but on legacy. What do we want to be remembered for? How can we make a difference beyond the game?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt started as a small conversation about impact,\u201d Betts recalled. \u201cThen it turned into a real plan. We said, \u2018Let\u2019s build something permanent \u2014 something that matters to this city.\u2019 And when someone brought up doing it for Dave, every hand in the room went up. It was unanimous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fundraising effort was quietly underway throughout spring training, with players contributing individually and pooling resources through the Dodgers\u2019 charitable foundation. Team owner Mark Walter and the Guggenheim group matched player contributions, doubling the project\u2019s potential. The result: a $12.5 million commitment and a vision that is already transforming into bricks, mortar, and hope.<\/p>\n

Kershaw, who has long been active in homelessness outreach through his charity \u201cKershaw\u2019s Challenge,\u201d called the shelter initiative a \u201cdefining moment\u201d for the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s bigger than baseball,\u201d Kershaw said. \u201cYou spend years grinding for wins, and you\u2019re proud of that. But this? This is different. This is eternal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homelessness in Los Angeles remains one of the most urgent humanitarian crises in the country. According to LAHSA\u2019s latest report, more than 4,000 youth in Los Angeles County experience homelessness on any given night \u2014 a number that has risen steadily due to housing costs, family displacement, and mental health struggles. Many of these youth identify as LGBTQ+, are former foster children, or have been victims of abuse and neglect.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis shelter is a lifeline,\u201d said Jenna Trosper, Director of Programs at Covenant House. \u201cFor so many young people, having a stable place to sleep, a meal, and someone who cares can change everything. The fact that this initiative is coming from the Dodgers, from their players personally \u2014 it sends a message of hope that\u2019s loud and clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Karen Bass praised the Dodgers\u2019 leadership during Tuesday\u2019s unveiling ceremony, calling the project \u201ca model for what civic partnership should look like.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is how we move forward \u2014 together, with compassion, generosity, and action,\u201d Bass said. \u201cToday, the Dodgers are reminding us that greatness isn\u2019t just measured in championships. It\u2019s measured in character. And today, they\u2019ve proven themselves champions in every sense.\u201d<\/p>\n
