On Tuesday, April 29, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced Gasso as the 2024 College Coach of the Year — a prestigious recognition that further cements her legacy as one of the most successful and influential coaches in the history of collegiate athletics.

The award, which celebrates excellence in coaching at the collegiate level in support of Olympic and Paralympic sport, is given annually to the top college coach who has demonstrated sustained success, made a significant impact on the development of athletes, and contributed meaningfully to their sport’s growth in the United States. Gasso fits that mold and more, having built a softball powerhouse at the University of Oklahoma that has dominated both the NCAA and international landscapes.

Gasso’s storied career spans three decades, but the past decade in particular has elevated her to iconic status. Under her guidance, the Sooners have become a modern dynasty, capturing seven national championships — including an unprecedented run of three consecutive Women’s College World Series titles from 2021 to 2023. Oklahoma has been ranked No. 1 in the nation multiple times, held one of the longest winning streaks in NCAA softball history, and produced dozens of All-Americans and Olympians.

Yet Gasso’s impact goes beyond mere wins and losses. She has created a culture centered around excellence, accountability, faith, and personal development — both on and off the field. Her leadership style blends intensity with empathy, discipline with trust. That balance has allowed her to recruit and retain top talent, develop players into national and international stars, and consistently field teams that not only compete, but dominate.

“She’s not just building athletes, she’s building women,” said Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione. “Patty Gasso’s program is a model of what collegiate athletics should be — competitive, principled, and transformative.”

The USOPC’s decision to honor Gasso as College Coach of the Year underscores her influence on the sport at both the collegiate and Olympic levels. Many of her former players have gone on to represent Team USA or participate in elite global competition, bringing with them the same values and competitive edge instilled in them at Oklahoma.

In its statement, the USOPC praised Gasso for “her unparalleled success in the NCAA, her commitment to athlete development, and her integral role in advancing the profile of women’s softball as a pathway to the Olympic Games.” The committee also acknowledged her long-standing influence on youth and amateur softball through coaching clinics, outreach efforts, and national team support.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to receive this award from the USOPC,” Gasso said. “It’s a testament to the incredible student-athletes I’ve had the privilege to coach and the outstanding staff and support system that surrounds me every day at Oklahoma. Our goal has always been to compete at the highest level and to do it with integrity, passion, and purpose.”

One of the reasons Gasso stood out among her peers in 2024 was her continued ability to prepare players for elite international competition. The U.S. national team’s success has long been intertwined with the development of top-tier college players, and few coaches have had a more direct pipeline to Team USA than Gasso.

Over the years, Sooner legends such as Keilani Ricketts, Lauren Chamberlain, and Jocelyn Alo have made their mark in national and global competition. More recently, stars like Kinzie Hansen, Jayda Coleman, and Tiare Jennings — key players in Oklahoma’s most recent championship runs — have donned the red, white, and blue.

Gasso’s program is widely viewed as an incubator for Olympic-level talent due to the level of competition it fosters, the coaching intensity, and the expectation of excellence day in and day out. Practices are rigorous, the mental approach is emphasized, and players are held to the highest standards — all traits that align closely with the values of Olympic preparation.

“Coach Gasso doesn’t just prepare you to win college games,” said Jennings, a multiple-time All-American. “She prepares you to be great at whatever you do — whether that’s at the pro level, the Olympics, or in life. She holds you to a standard that you didn’t even know you could reach.”

Though the USOPC award is based on cumulative excellence and broader contributions to the sport, Gasso’s performance during the 2024 season certainly played a role. As of April 29, the Sooners once again held a top-three national ranking and were eyeing yet another Women’s College World Series appearance.

The 2024 squad continued to embody the hallmark traits of Gasso’s teams: elite pitching, explosive offense, and relentless defense. The team’s depth and chemistry stood out, with a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars leading the way. Their performance throughout the season reaffirmed Gasso’s ability to evolve with the game — adjusting to changes in recruiting, analytics, and the increasing competitiveness of NCAA softball.

Even in a year filled with parity across the sport, Gasso’s team remained a consistent force. Her ability to manage expectations, develop talent, and maintain the “Sooner Standard” was as evident as ever.

Beyond her direct impact on players, Gasso’s coaching influence has spread across the sport through her vast coaching tree. Dozens of her former assistants, graduate assistants, and players have gone on to become head coaches at the collegiate and high school levels. Many run programs modeled after Gasso’s principles of discipline, culture, and intentional leadership.

This ripple effect has helped raise the overall level of coaching in softball, particularly in the college ranks. Coaches across the country — including rivals — often point to Gasso as a standard-bearer for how to build and sustain a program with integrity and competitive fire.

“She’s not just a great coach, she’s a mentor to so many of us in the profession,” said Florida head coach Tim Walton. “We compete hard, but I have tremendous respect for the way she does things. She raises the bar for all of us.”

Gasso is also widely respected for her advocacy for women’s sports, equity in athletics, and student-athlete welfare. She has spoken out on issues ranging from NIL reform to mental health resources and gender equality in coaching.

In a time of rapid change in collegiate athletics, Gasso has remained a vocal and thoughtful presence — supporting athletes while also calling for accountability and long-term vision from university leadership and national governing bodies. Her perspective is sought after not only because of her success but because of her clarity and authenticity.

“She’s a voice of reason and experience in a space that really needs it,” said NCAA Softball Committee chair Andrea Williams. “Patty has seen this sport grow from the ground up and she cares deeply about where it’s headed.”

In addition to her on-campus work, Gasso remains active in youth softball circles, mentoring young players through camps, clinics, and outreach initiatives. She views these as not just recruiting tools but opportunities to give back to a sport that has given her so much.

With the USOPC College Coach of the Year award now added to her long list of accolades, Gasso’s legacy continues to grow. She is already a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame, has earned multiple National Coach of the Year awards, and is the winningest coach in Oklahoma softball history.

But in typical Gasso fashion, she deflects individual praise and stays focused on the bigger picture.

“This isn’t just about me,” she said after receiving the USOPC award. “It’s about the game of softball. It’s about the athletes who commit themselves to greatness. It’s about creating something that lasts — a culture, a standard, a purpose. That’s what matters to me.”

As Oklahoma prepares for the postseason, the expectations are sky-high once again — and Gasso wouldn’t have it any other way. She thrives in moments of pressure and has instilled that same confidence and calm into her players.

Whether or not the Sooners add another national championship this year, Gasso’s legacy is already secure. The USOPC award is simply the latest recognition of a career that has reshaped the landscape of college athletics, elevated softball on the national and Olympic stages, and empowered generations of athletes to believe in themselves.

And remarkably, she’s not slowing down.

“This award is an incredible honor,” she said. “But we’re not done yet.”

PATTY GASSO HONORED AS USOPC COLLEGE COACH OF THE YEAR Oklahoma softball’s dynasty under head coach Patty Gasso added another historic milestone this week.
