A familiar face who pitched in Baltimore just two seasons ago, Gibson was expected to eat innings, limit damage, and offer a seasoned presence to guide the next wave of Orioles talent.<\/p>\n

Instead, Gibson\u2019s 2025 season debut turned into a catastrophe of historic proportions \u2014 one that left fans at Camden Yards stunned, Orioles coaches frustrated, and Gibson himself searching for answers.<\/p>\n

Over the course of just four innings, Gibson allowed nine earned runs<\/strong>, surrendered 11 hits<\/strong>, and watched the opposing team blast five home runs<\/strong> off of him. The outing marked one of the worst starts of his 12-year Major League career, and it immediately raised questions about both his current effectiveness and the Orioles’ decision to bring him back for another run.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath of the loss, manager Brandon Hyde was careful not to throw his pitcher under the bus, but his tone spoke volumes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not the way we wanted to start his season, obviously,\u201d Hyde said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t have his command. He was up in the zone a lot, and against a lineup like that, you\u2019re going to get punished. We\u2019ve got to be better, and Kyle knows that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gibson, who is known as one of the more accountable and thoughtful veterans in the league, didn\u2019t shy away from blame when he met with reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s frustrating,\u201d Gibson said, shaking his head. \u201cI\u2019ve been around a long time, and I know that starts like this can happen, but you never expect it to go that sideways. I\u2019ve got to be better. I didn\u2019t execute tonight. That\u2019s on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if he was worried about his stuff declining, Gibson gave a measured but honest response.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy stuff\u2019s not going to light up a radar gun anymore. That\u2019s not who I am,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I know I can pitch. I know how to get outs. I didn\u2019t do that tonight, but I\u2019m confident I\u2019ll bounce back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Statistically speaking, Gibson\u2019s outing was historically bad. According to Elias Sports Bureau, he became just the second pitcher in Orioles franchise history to allow five home runs in a season debut. The nine earned runs tied for the most in a debut by an Orioles pitcher since 2000.<\/p>\n

Moreover, only a handful of MLB pitchers since 2000 have allowed 5+ home runs in their season opener. Most of those outings were followed by either a quick trip to the injured list or a reassignment to the bullpen.<\/p>\n

The question now becomes: What do the Orioles do next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Baltimore entered the 2025 season with more questions than answers in its rotation. Youngsters Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall are still developing consistency. John Means, the club\u2019s former ace, is still working his way back from a second Tommy John surgery. And while Dean Kremer has flashed upside, he\u2019s not a guaranteed front-line arm.<\/p>\n

Gibson was supposed to be the safety net \u2014 a veteran who could take the ball every five days and keep the Orioles in games. After just one start, that narrative is already being rewritten.<\/p>\n

Some fans have already taken to social media to demand Gibson\u2019s demotion or release. Others are calling for a swift promotion of a top pitching prospect like Cade Povich or Chayce McDermott. But the Orioles\u2019 front office likely won\u2019t make a knee-jerk reaction based on one start \u2014 even one as disastrous as this.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, every game matters. Every rotation spot matters. And while Hyde wants to give Gibson the benefit of the doubt, he also knows that another meltdown like Monday\u2019s could put the Orioles in an early-season hole.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll look at the film, work with Kyle, and try to get him back on track,\u201d Hyde said postgame. \u201cHe\u2019s a pro. He\u2019s been through this before. We\u2019ve got to help him find a way to be effective again.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Kyle Gibson, this start could be a fork-in-the-road moment.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Gibson has battled adversity. He\u2019s dealt with injuries, inconsistency, and roster uncertainty. Yet time and time again, he\u2019s reinvented himself \u2014 leaning more on offspeed pitches, refining his mechanics, becoming a mentor to younger players.<\/p>\n

That same resilience will now be tested again. The veteran knows time is not on his side. At 36, every outing is a referendum on what he still has left in the tank.<\/p>\n

If he can bounce back with a quality start next time out, he\u2019ll begin to rebuild trust with the coaching staff and fanbase. If not, this return to Baltimore may be remembered not for its sentimental value, but for how quickly it unraveled.<\/p>\n

The Orioles have a day off before their next series, giving the club time to regroup. Gibson\u2019s next scheduled start would be five days later, potentially against a division rival \u2014 a high-stakes environment where Hyde will need better results.<\/p>\n

Gibson, for his part, knows what\u2019s at stake.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in this game too long to panic after one start,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I\u2019m not going to sugarcoat it either. That wasn\u2019t good enough. And it won\u2019t happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n
