A familiar face who pitched in Baltimore just two seasons ago, Gibson was expected to eat innings, limit damage, and offer a seasoned presence to guide the next wave of Orioles talent.

Instead, Gibson’s 2025 season debut turned into a catastrophe of historic proportions — one that left fans at Camden Yards stunned, Orioles coaches frustrated, and Gibson himself searching for answers.

Over the course of just four innings, Gibson allowed nine earned runs, surrendered 11 hits, and watched the opposing team blast five home runs off of him. The outing marked one of the worst starts of his 12-year Major League career, and it immediately raised questions about both his current effectiveness and the Orioles’ decision to bring him back for another run.

From the very first pitch, something felt off.

Gibson opened the game with an 89 mph fastball that caught too much of the plate — a pitch that was promptly lined into right-center for a double. Moments later, a hanging cutter was deposited into the left field bleachers. Just like that, Gibson and the Orioles were in a 2-0 hole, and the night had barely begun.

What followed was a cascade of poorly located pitches, missed spots, and hard contact. Gibson’s normally reliable sinker flattened out over the plate. His changeup had little deception. Even his trademark backdoor slider — a pitch that served him well during his earlier Baltimore stint — failed to generate swings and misses. The opposing hitters feasted on nearly every mistake, launching five homers and a string of line-drive singles that chased Gibson before the end of the fifth inning.

By the time manager Brandon Hyde made the slow walk to the mound to pull his veteran starter, the damage was done: 9 runs, 11 hits, 5 home runs, and a disheartened Orioles dugout watching a game unravel before it had a chance to stabilize.

It’s worth noting that when Gibson pitched for the Orioles in 2023, he was far from dominant — but he was undeniably serviceable.

That season, Gibson posted a 15-9 record with a 4.73 ERA across 192 innings. He led the team in innings pitched, often giving the Orioles six or more innings even when he lacked his best stuff. He was the very definition of a back-end innings-eater: not flashy, not overpowering, but reliable and durable.

After spending the 2024 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he recorded a 4.88 ERA in 31 starts, Gibson entered free agency as a low-risk signing for a team in need of experience. The Orioles, who lost several veteran arms during the offseason, decided to take a flyer on their former workhorse.

For $5 million on a one-year deal, the move seemed low-cost and low-risk.

But in his first start back with Baltimore, Gibson looked like a shadow of the pitcher the Orioles had leaned on just two years prior. His velocity was down nearly two miles per hour from his 2023 averages. His command — typically one of his strengths — was erratic. Perhaps most concerning, however, was the lack of competitiveness in his pitches. Everything over the plate was hittable. Everything on the edges missed its mark.

In the aftermath of the loss, manager Brandon Hyde was careful not to throw his pitcher under the bus, but his tone spoke volumes.

“That’s not the way we wanted to start his season, obviously,” Hyde said. “He didn’t have his command. He was up in the zone a lot, and against a lineup like that, you’re going to get punished. We’ve got to be better, and Kyle knows that.”

Gibson, who is known as one of the more accountable and thoughtful veterans in the league, didn’t shy away from blame when he met with reporters.

“It’s frustrating,” Gibson said, shaking his head. “I’ve been around a long time, and I know that starts like this can happen, but you never expect it to go that sideways. I’ve got to be better. I didn’t execute tonight. That’s on me.”

When asked if he was worried about his stuff declining, Gibson gave a measured but honest response.

“My stuff’s not going to light up a radar gun anymore. That’s not who I am,” he said. “But I know I can pitch. I know how to get outs. I didn’t do that tonight, but I’m confident I’ll bounce back.”

Statistically speaking, Gibson’s outing was historically bad. According to Elias Sports Bureau, he became just the second pitcher in Orioles franchise history to allow five home runs in a season debut. The nine earned runs tied for the most in a debut by an Orioles pitcher since 2000.

Moreover, only a handful of MLB pitchers since 2000 have allowed 5+ home runs in their season opener. Most of those outings were followed by either a quick trip to the injured list or a reassignment to the bullpen.

The question now becomes: What do the Orioles do next?

Baltimore entered the 2025 season with more questions than answers in its rotation. Youngsters Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall are still developing consistency. John Means, the club’s former ace, is still working his way back from a second Tommy John surgery. And while Dean Kremer has flashed upside, he’s not a guaranteed front-line arm.

Gibson was supposed to be the safety net — a veteran who could take the ball every five days and keep the Orioles in games. After just one start, that narrative is already being rewritten.

Some fans have already taken to social media to demand Gibson’s demotion or release. Others are calling for a swift promotion of a top pitching prospect like Cade Povich or Chayce McDermott. But the Orioles’ front office likely won’t make a knee-jerk reaction based on one start — even one as disastrous as this.

Still, the pressure is now squarely on Gibson. He’ll likely be given another start or two to prove that this was an outlier and not the new normal. If the next outing looks anything like his season debut, however, the Orioles may have to consider alternatives sooner than expected.

Manager Brandon Hyde now faces the difficult task of balancing loyalty to a veteran with the competitive urgency of a team expected to contend.

Baltimore is no longer the rebuilding franchise of 2019 or 2020. After back-to-back postseason appearances and a loaded farm system feeding into the big-league roster, expectations in 2025 are high. A playoff berth is not just hoped for — it’s expected.

With that in mind, every game matters. Every rotation spot matters. And while Hyde wants to give Gibson the benefit of the doubt, he also knows that another meltdown like Monday’s could put the Orioles in an early-season hole.

“We’ll look at the film, work with Kyle, and try to get him back on track,” Hyde said postgame. “He’s a pro. He’s been through this before. We’ve got to help him find a way to be effective again.”

For Kyle Gibson, this start could be a fork-in-the-road moment.

Throughout his career, Gibson has battled adversity. He’s dealt with injuries, inconsistency, and roster uncertainty. Yet time and time again, he’s reinvented himself — leaning more on offspeed pitches, refining his mechanics, becoming a mentor to younger players.

That same resilience will now be tested again. The veteran knows time is not on his side. At 36, every outing is a referendum on what he still has left in the tank.

If he can bounce back with a quality start next time out, he’ll begin to rebuild trust with the coaching staff and fanbase. If not, this return to Baltimore may be remembered not for its sentimental value, but for how quickly it unraveled.

The Orioles have a day off before their next series, giving the club time to regroup. Gibson’s next scheduled start would be five days later, potentially against a division rival — a high-stakes environment where Hyde will need better results.

Gibson, for his part, knows what’s at stake.

“I’ve been in this game too long to panic after one start,” he said. “But I’m not going to sugarcoat it either. That wasn’t good enough. And it won’t happen again.”

Orioles fans can only hope that’s true — because if this version of Kyle Gibson sticks around much longer, Baltimore’s 2025 season could get a lot more complicated, a lot sooner than anyone expected.

Title: Kyle Gibson’s Nightmarish Return: Orioles Starter
