Dutch coach passed in particular by Real Madrid, Ajax or the Batavian selection, Leo Beenhakker died at the age of 82.
Former Dutch coach of Real Madrid and Ajax Amsterdam Leo Beenhakker, who was also coach of the Netherlands team, died at the age of 82, his two former clubs announced on Thursday. The Dutch coach directed the Spanish club between 1986 and 1989, then again in 1991-1992. In four seasons on the Merengues bench, he won six trophies, including three successive liga between 1987 and 1989. “Real Madrid wishes to express his condolences and affection for his family, clubs and loved ones”, wrote Real in a press release.
“A very human coach who understood things beyond football”
'Don Leo', who had only a modest football career, also led several other clubs in Europe, including the two large rivals of the Dutch championship, Ajax and Feyenoord.
“It was with great sadness and disarray that Ajax learned on Thursday the sad news of Leo Beenhakker's death,” the Ajacid club said in a statement on Thursday evening. “Beenhakker was undoubtedly one of the highest and most effective Dutch coaches,” added the club he directed twice, at the very late 1970s
During his second term at Ajax, recalls the Beenhakker club had popularized the expression “of Patatgeneratia” (or generation fast food) to describe his workforce rich in talented players but which he found too dilettantes, like the twins Frank and Ronald de Boer or Richard Witschge
“He was a truly sociable person, who was still interested in others,” praised ex-player Danny Blind, quoted in the Ajax press release. Jan Wouters, who was his captain, paid tribute to a coach who “could really motivate a group, a very human coach who understood things beyond football”.
One of the most titled Dutch coaches
With three titles of champion of the Netherlands and three of Spanish champion, he was one of the Dutch coaches with the richest list. In selection, success was not the same. In addition to the Netherlands (1985 and then during the 1990 World Cup), Beenhakker also directed the Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago and Poland selections. In total, recalls Ajax, he directed three different selections in two World Cups and one euro but never won a match in a major tournament.
