I could never have imagined, back in 1992 when I first took the reins of this incredible football program, that I would have the honor of leading our team to such great heights. In all honesty, I never sought glory or fame. What I always sought was a chance to do something special, to bring pride to the people of Tennessee, to our incredible student-athletes, and to our fans. Over the years, we’ve experienced so much together—both the exhilarating highs and the gut-wrenching lows—and each of those moments has left an indelible mark on my heart.

In reflecting on my time here, one thing becomes crystal clear: It has always been about the people. It’s been about the families of the players who entrusted their sons to us, knowing that they would be treated with the utmost care and respect. It’s been about the coaches who worked tirelessly beside me, pouring their hearts and souls into the game, day in and day out. It’s been about the staff, the administrators, and the fans whose unwavering support carried us through both the triumphs and the trials.

But most of all, it’s been about you—the Tennessee Vol fans. You are the heartbeat of this program, the reason why every player who wears the orange and white understands that they’re playing for something far bigger than themselves. You have shown up in the thousands, through snowstorms and heat waves, to cheer us on, to lift us up, and to remind us every single day of why we fight. The passion and loyalty you’ve demonstrated over the years has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I will forever be humbled by the love you have given me and this program.

As I reflect on the 17 years I had the privilege of leading our team, there are so many moments that stand out. The 1998 National Championship, of course, was the pinnacle of our success. To see our players, our coaches, and our fans come together in that unforgettable season was something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. That team, that special group of young men who worked so hard and never wavered in their belief, will always hold a special place in my heart. We proved that with discipline, dedication, and unity, anything is possible.

But for me, the victories on the field were only part of the story. The relationships, the personal growth, and the opportunity to shape young men both on and off the field are what I will cherish most. There’s a saying in coaching that you have to build a program, not just a team. I’ve always believed in that. It’s not enough to simply win games; you have to build character, you have to instill values, and you have to help young men become leaders who will make an impact in the world long after their football days are over. That’s what we’ve always tried to do here at Tennessee.

Of course, we’ve faced adversity as well. Every program does. We’ve had our share of losses, both on the field and in life, and each of those moments tested us. But what I’ve learned through those challenges is that adversity is what ultimately defines you. It’s how you respond to setbacks, how you lift each other up when the going gets tough, that reveals your true character. That’s the spirit of Tennessee football, and it’s a spirit that will continue to burn brightly long after I’ve walked off this field for the last time.

As I prepare to step away from coaching, I do so with a heart full of gratitude. I want to thank every single player who wore the orange and white under my watch.
