Launched six years ago, the Summer Camp des Sables Vendée Basket has gradually made a place apart in the summer landscape of basketball internships in France. This summer again, the National 1 club opens the doors of its professional environment to young basketball players, from U11 to U18, for a week (or two). Denis Mettay, director of the club, returns to what makes the DNA of this camp between sea and parquet.

Denis, the Sables Vendée Basket club is organizing a summer camp. There are many camps now offered in France, why participate in it and not another?
In summer, players want to continue to progress but also enjoy rest moments. What could be better than doing it in our idyllic setting? We are facing the ocean with direct access to the beach! The accommodation is on the verge of the ocean, with sea views … We must be the only ones in France to offer this.
But beware, the priority remains basketball with more than ten training sessions during the week, which is equivalent to five weeks of training during the season for many young people.

It is quite rare to see a structure with a professional team organize a camp. What can this bring to residents? They train in particular in the Salle of the Pro team, members of the staff supervise the practice of basketball?
For us, a professional club must also fulfill its training mission towards the young generations. Our professional players are present on the camp to give their advice and share their experience. It is a privileged moment and adored by the trainees. Yes, they train in the room of our NM1 team, and this camp also allows us to identify young people with potential for future seasons.
It is not only basketball on this camp, what are the other capital gains that this camp offer?
We take advantage of installations by the sea to offer two surfing and paddle initiation sessions, supervised by professionals. Each day, there is also recovery at the beach, and physical work in the sand. This year, all these activities concern all young people.
Soon you will be able to evolve in a brand new Arena. Will campers be able to benefit from it too in the years to come?
As of next year, the camp will actually take advantage of the installations of our new Arena and its ultramodern room. It is a real pride for us and a great promise for young people who will come to camp in the sands.
Does your excellent season in NM1 allow you to highlight the club even more and in particular its camp?
It is true that our season gives us a much more important exhibition. We feel that the LSVB takes its place in the French basketball landscape and we are very proud of it. It naturally reflected on the camp, which attracts more and more young people every year.
