The University of Tennessee’s marching band, known as the “Pride of the Southland,” boasts a rich history dating back to 1869. Founded as part of the Military Department, the band has evolved into a 415-member ensemble recognized for its precision, musicality, and showmanship.
Under the direction of Dr. Michael Stewart, the band has expanded its repertoire and performance venues, participating in over 40 bowl games, including the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Orange Bowl. Notably, the band has represented Tennessee in 14 presidential inaugurations, more than any other civilian organization.

ESPN’s acknowledgment of the Pride of the Southland as the world’s top collegiate marching band is a testament to its sustained excellence and innovation.
