Sarun Jasikevicius has just marked the history of the Euroleague. Indeed, the former coach of Zalgiris Kaunas and FC Barcelona, who now directs Fenerbahçe, has just been elected coach of the year. But how is it historic?
Simply because the one we nicknamed “Saras”, an ephemeral NBA player, has already won this competition as a player, four times: in 2003 with Barcelona, then 2004 and 2005 with the Maccabi Tel Aviv, finally in 2009 with Panathinaikos. And never a former winner of the Euroleague on the prosecution had then become a coach of the year.
This trophy rewards his finished season with a 23 victories for 11 defeats (second in the competition) while he was handicapped by the injuries of Scottie Wilbekin (absent all season in the first game), Wade Baldwin, Devon Hall or Dyshawn Pierre.
Next objective for Sanunas Jasikevicius, which is one of the 25 legends of the Euroleague at the beginning of the century: to become the fourth former winner of the competition to win it also on the bench. Until now, only Lolo Sainz, Armenak Alachachian and Svetislav Pesic have succeeded in this feat.
