Who could have predicted that the Suns would miss the playoffs and even the play-in this season? Not many people, and especially not the owner of the Mat Ishbia franchise. The latter spoke publicly before a summer which promises to be hectic.

At the start of the season, there are few who envisaged such a catastrophic exercise for the Suns. Eliminated sharply in the first round of the 2024 playoffs, observers rather thought of a rebound on the part of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, who have as much talent as pride. But the reality on the ground was very different.

Not helped by the absence of a real good leader in his workforce, Mike Budenholzer never found the right formula. His instructions did not always go to the players, since he has often been struggling with Kevin during the field, and that Bradley Beal did not appreciate that he is asked to change role for the good of the collective.

The big boss of the Suns breaks the silence

If there is one man who must be disappointed, it is the owner Mat Ishbia, at the origin of this project. As a reminder, only three days after bought the franchise in February 2023, Kevin during the desert at his request. Passing in front of local journalists, the big boss took the floor and made a funny promise to the supporters:

It's a shameful season. Horrible. It was a real failure. We will have to do things differently. I am disappointed, it was really not fun and entertaining to watch our team play. I appear before you to take up my responsibilities. What we tried to do did not bear fruit.

We sincerely thought that this project was going to work and this is not the case. I have to do a better job to define the identity of this franchise. I will be better in my role as owner. You will see the change, you will be proud of it. It will be undeniable. We will win titles, in the plural.

Mat Ishbia knows the world of basketball, he who was champion NCAA as a player with Michigan State. A single failure was therefore enough for him to question himself and review his strategy at the head of the Suns. He is well aware that stirring stars no longer work, which should cause real upheaval in the coming months. What if KD was not the only one to leave?

Fans of the Suns are entitled to be disappointedbut at least, the owner Mat Ishbia assumes his mistakes publicly. It remains to be seen whether he will last and introduce a big change during the summer.
