The 39 -year -old former international died of these injuries caused by a car accident on Friday near Zagreb.
Former Croatian international Nikola Pokrivac, which has notably passed through AS Monaco, died in a car accident at the age of 39, the Croatian football federation announced on Saturday. The accident occurred Friday in Karlovac, about fifty kilometers southwest of Zagreb. Two teammates from the defensive midfielder, who accompanied him in the car, are in critical condition.
Pokrivac had to end his professional career at 30 due to Hodgkin lymphoma but continued to play in amateur clubs in Croatia. He evolved with Dinamo Zagreb, who paid tribute to him on his social networks, before joining Monaco in 2008 where he stayed a season and played 36 games (3 goals). He then wore the Red Bull Salzburg jersey from 2009 to 2011 before returning to Dinamo. He had 15 selections with Croatia.
“Nikola was a great footballer, who lived football until his last moments and who has shown great courage by overcoming a terrible disease. It is a great loss for our football, and particularly painful for his family ”wrote the Croatian federation in its press release.
