The Auburn University Marching Band (AUMB) has long been recognized for its excellence, precision, and spirited performances. Founded in 1897, the Auburn University Marching Band has a rich history of captivating audiences across the nation with spectacular performances. Whether marching before the home crowd or away, the Auburn Band has attained a position of national distinction and a reputation for excellence second to none. The band was awarded the 2004 Sudler Intercollegiate Marching Band Trophy, the nation’s highest and most coveted award for college and university marching bands. With 380 members, the current marching band is the largest in university history. The band has performed at various prestigious events, including the 2011 and 2014 BCS National Championship Games and the 2010, 2013, and 2017 Southeastern Conference Championship Games. Other recent appearances include the 2010, 2015, and 2020 Outback Bowl, the 2007 and 2012 Chick-fil-a Bowl, the 2017 Sugar Bowl, the 2018 Peach Bowl, 2018 and 2023 Music City Bowls, and the 2008 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. The band was one of only six collegiate marching bands selected by ESPN to participate in its 2008 Battle of the Bands promotion. Most recently, the band was selected as the winner of the national Metallica Marching Band Competition.
The Metallica Marching Band Competition Victory
On January 7, 2024, the Auburn University Marching Band achieved a significant milestone by winning the first-ever Metallica Marching Band Competition. They secured victories in both the Collegiate Division 1 category and the Fan Favorite category. The competition, which was organized by the heavy metal band Metallica, challenged marching bands at both high school and collegiate levels to create performances incorporating Metallica’s music. The Auburn University Marching Band distinguished themselves among the competitors, which included bands from various universities such as Fresno State University, Iowa State University, University of Iowa, University of Texas at Austin, and Western Illinois University
The band’s victory brought them $85,000 in musical equipment, courtesy of Metallica and its sponsors. This competition was a significant event in the marching band community, with over 450 schools participating and showcasing their unique and impressive performances.
A Global Stage
The Auburn University Marching Band’s performances have taken them beyond the United States, showcasing their talent on a global stage. In 2008, the band performed at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland, marking their first overseas appearance.
