DeMar DeRozan’s potential move to the Miami Heat has been a topic of significant speculation in recent NBA discussions. Despite the interest, the Heat faced significant challenges in acquiring DeRozan. A primary obstacle was the difficulty in moving Duncan Robinson’s substantial contract. Robinson, signed a five-year, \$90 million extension with Miami in 2021, is now in the second-to-last season of that contract and is set to have a cap hit of \$19.6 million this year. That’s a lot of money for a 30-year-old small forward who doesn’t offer much more than being a knockdown shooter. After scoring 12.9 PPG while shooting 39.5% from 3-point range, Robinson improved his stock last season after playing in just 42 games the year before. Yet, teams still apparently weren’t willing to take on his contract, and it’s not like the Heat were eager to attach picks to unload him either. This made it challenging to facilitate a deal without compromising their future flexibility.
In free agency, the Heat were among the teams that DeRozan considered, describing them as a “legitimate” option. However, he ultimately chose to join the Sacramento Kings in a three-team sign-and-trade deal, which also involved the San Antonio Spurs. This decision was influenced by various factors, including the Kings’ promising roster and the opportunity to contribute to a team with playoff aspirations.
While DeRozan’s move to Sacramento concluded the immediate speculation about his potential fit with the Heat, the discussions underscored Miami’s ongoing efforts to enhance their roster.
