“He assured me that, except injury, he would be present for Euro 2025”. Jean-Pierre Hunckler, the president of the French basketball federation, said in the columns of Progress (Paying article)Saturday, January 25, that Victor Wembanyama had to compete in the competition scheduled from August 27 to September 14, 2025 and which will take place between four countries: Latvia, Poland, Finland and Cyprus. Absent from the previous edition (injured) and the 2023 World Cup (focused on its NBA debut), the tricolor prodigy is therefore preparing to play its first major tournament outside the Olympic Games.
“We are lucky to have a young player who has his head on our shoulders and who thinks of French basketball as well as his development”appreciates Hunckler, who took the lead of the Federation on December 14. The French selection, now directed by Frédéric Faux, who took over from Vincent Collet at the end of September, will therefore be able to count on his “alien” of 2.21m to try to win a second European title, 12 years after his first coronation.
In the meantime, Victor Wembanyama has to finish his second season with the San Antonio Spurs. After the Parisian tour against the Indiana Pacers (a victory, a defeat), the Texan team is late on its objective of participation in the playoffs. The Spurs are currently 12th in the Western Conference with a balance sheet of 20 victories and 23 losses, while the first part of the regular season has just been exceeded.
