The idea of removing extensions in the Champions League was discussed in UEFA but will not see the light of day in the 2025-2026 season while the new format of the competition attracted members of the continental body.
At a time when FIFA or UEFA have added additional matches with the overhaul of the Club World Cup and the Champions League, several players have complained about an overloaded calendar this season. In order to reduce the workload for international stars, the European body has briefly considered to suppress extensions in C1 from the 2025-2026 campaign.
UEFA has informed the media on the sidelines of the quarter -finals that such a change, a real sports revolution, would not intervene immediately. Extensions will therefore always be on the program next year during the direct elimination phase of the prestigious competition.
A hypothesis quickly dismissed
Admittedly, the proposal to remove its two additional 15 minutes existed. But the body chaired by Aleksander Ceferin finally made their maintenance during a meeting of the Interclub competition committee.
We therefore keep the same format as that which is currently in place, at least for the 2025-2026 season. The proposal was discussed but will not go further, despite the position of certain UEFA members around hellish rates for players.
All the interlocutors of the director of European football surveyed are also completely satisfied with the new “Swiss format” of the Champions League. An evolution which has attracted internally and which is no longer really debated with fans after a first tournament rich in suspense and twists and turns during the league phase concluded in January.
