Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), owner of Paris Saint-Germain, was requested by the NBA to create a new NBA franchise in Europe, learned on Thursday March 27, the Radio France sports department and “ICI Paris-Ile-de-France” (ex-France Bleu), confirming information from the Parisian. “We have expressed interest”confirms a source close to the file.

The overpowered American league is considering outsourcing its championship. Among the options, the creation of a European version, based on sports brands, and in particular football. The NBA commissioner Adam Silver, present in January for the two relocated matches of the NBA in Paris, took advantage of his trip to meet the president of PSG Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. During the Champions League match against Manchester City, on January 22, the two men were able to exchange about the franchise in Paris, explains this same source.

While PSG wishes to leave the Parc des Princes, QSI plans to create a new multifunction, multisport stadium, and therefore able to welcome a basketball team, if the project comes to materialize. Paris Saint-Germain, which no longer has a basketball section within it, maintains a strong link with the orange ball. The American basketball player Kevin Durant, quadruple medalist of Olympic gold with the US team, is an indirect minority shareholder of PSG, via the investment fund Artcos Partners. PSG is also linked to the Jordan clothing brand, sponsor since 2018.

The NBA which is eyeing Europe and has been discussing for many months with the Euroligue, organizer of the European tournament, will communicate on the subject on Friday.
